Aaron owns things and has found tremendous success in said ownership. After talking with a young entrepreneur about owning different companies, Laughlin Assoc came up.
Back in the 1990s, Lee and Aaron purchased another company in Nevada and as it grew, everything was good. Then in late 2001, the offer was made to Aaron to purchase Laughlin Assoc.
Passing the baton in front of the employees, they began the process of what it takes to refocus a company that had lost the powerfully charismatic previously owner (in whom the company was named after). They asked, How can we sale to clients in such a way that will bring them back for years to come? Education. Teach the client so they have a greater likelihood of success in their own life.
Some people want rainbows and unicorns after having pixie dust sprinkled all over them. This false sense of propensity perpetuated a problem in the industry of not wanting to go the distance. Aaron reshaped this unrealistic fairy tale and made reality even more enduring as a success, even if their numbers went down initially at the beginning.
According to Steve Jobs, a lot of Apple’s success was knowing who to say no to.
You don’t have to say YES to everything, but you should look and ask questions, especially to the right people. You do NOT ask management team; you ask the employees. They know how to make things better. Look for things that stay in the wheelhouse, or items that work, which occurs by staying curious and surrounding yourself with good people.
We have many opportunities for great things, so the main point isn’t to take everything on at once, but be discerning and set up a time line. Protect your core business, then figure out ways to reinvent yourself so you stay relevant in the marketplace.
Aaron calls this a Blueprint Strategy Session. Have the big picture, but start from the base and work your way up as the client needs it.
Walt Disney even stated that Disneyland will never be finished. Not as long as there are dreams and imagination. Something that Aaron states while speaking to vast audiences is to establish the belief that “I am not my corporation and the corporation is not me.”

Stay curious, look at your other opportunities, and don’t go too far in the field. Have a long term goal but stay in the wheelhouse. Stay really good at what you’re doing and constantly ask, “How can I improve?” Never stop inventing who you are.
